Snowshoe Basics: Enjoy Winter One Step at a Time

February 13, 2025

BY MOE B., MANAGER ODP PROGRAMMING

Snowshoeing is a wonderful way to explore the serene beauty of winter landscapes. This sport has evolved over thousands of years where early snowshoes were designed to distribute weight over a larger area, allowing indigenous peoples the ability to walk on top of the snow rather than sinking into it. Today, snowshoes still function in the same way, but we use them less for survival and more as a fun winter activity.

Whether you’re hoping to get your old snowshoes out for a romp in the snow, or are just getting into the sport, here are some tips to make it the best winter yet!

Finding the Right Gear

If you're new to this activity, the first step is to ensure you have the right gear. Selecting the appropriate snowshoes is crucial. They should provide enough flotation (the snowshoe’s ability to keep you from sinking into the snow), be appropriate for the type of terrain and snow you plan to traverse, and how much gear you are planning to carry. For more information on how to find the right fit and type of snowshoe, check out our video How to Size Snowshoes.

Basic Technique to Make Your Experience Enjoyable

Once you're geared up, it's time to learn some basic techniques. Snowshoeing is relatively straightforward, but some technique is required. For example, adopting a wider stance can help you avoid stepping on your snowshoes, and using poles can provide extra balance, especially on uneven ground or in icy conditions.

Prepare for Your Adventure

We believe that staying safe outdoors is the most important skill that we teach at L.L.Bean’s Outdoor Discovery Programs. So, here are some final tips on how to prepare for your winter adventure!

  • Plan your route before you leave your house, starting with well-trafficked, flat trails if it is your first time out.
  • Always check the weather forecast and trail conditions (if possible) before heading out.
  • Don’t forget to pack essentials like water, snacks, a map, and a first-aid kit.
  • Make sure to properly layer your clothing to ensure you stay warm even when temperatures are low. To learn more about our base layers, and which ones are perfect for you, check out our Guide to the Perfect Base Layers.

With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to enjoying the invigorating world of snowshoeing.
